Rietveld Chair (Red and Blue Chair)
This is probabl the most uncomfortable chair you can find, but it is still 'hot'.
In a series of simple planes and 'sticks', Rietveld has summed up the entire deStijl spirit. Oddly enough, the chair existed as a natural wood design and was only coloured after Rietveld became interested in the deStijl movement.
To some degree, the chair is a sort of essay in primacy. Obviously there is the use of primary colours, but there is also a sense in which the chair is defined by the basic principles of 'chairness'. One is able to read the way that the chair works because it is completely revealed to us. Very little is extraneous or extra to the necessity of sitting.
Okay, so it is damned uncomfortable, but perhaps it is more about understanding what it is to be a chair than it is about sitting on a chair.
