Dominus Winery

Designer: Herzog & DeMeuron

The way the light plays through the 'gabian basket' construction of this part of the winery is simply sublime. In using the gabions, H&D are able to keep the stored wine in a cool space without making it seem too heavy.

There is a beauty and simplicity to what the architects have done, which seems in keeping with 'fine wine'. A good wine is not about how many things you can add, but in choosing the right grape, raising it well, picking at the right time and bottling it under the right conditions. There is no space for getting clever or fancy. In the same way, the building takes a straightforward approach and achieves something which is tasteful, bold and beautiful (with a fruity aftertaste...)
