SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION OF SMITHFIELD/BARBICAN TO LONDON IT’S SELF
gagosian gallery
the reason i have chosen the gagosian gallery is because it has housed some of the most famouse and influential artists of our time like Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Frank Stella, Rachel Whiteread, Jake and Dinos Chapman, John Currin, Jasper Johns, Gilbert and George and Nan Goldin.
the gagosin gallery gave damien hirst his first ever solo exhibition in 1996 called No Sense of Absolute Corruption.
although in my opinion the gagosian gallery is one of the main culpriats of corrupting art and focusing more one the money than the soul of art.
St Giles Church, barbican
St Gile’s Church- Barbican
The barbican is home to one of the few remaining medieval churches- St. Giles. According to historic reports a church has been on the same site as St. Giles for nearly one thousand years.
I think the church is most interesting because of its architectural history.
The church started off as a little Norman chapel but as the numbers of people visiting the church increased the church was extended to accommodate the new visitors to the church. The church has endured three major fires from which it had to be extensively restored to its original state.
London Wall
The remains of the wall serve a great purpose to the history of this country, as it shaped the city of Londinium, and is considered by many to be the real ‘London’. The wall provides a great architectural influence to anyone who explores the journey and methods that took place in its construction.
